S01E01 – Chasing the Dream: From Local Leagues to International Competitions"

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

Welcome to our first episode of Breakthrough, the handball podcast! We are excited to be the first and only handball podcast in Australia that aims to explore the game of handball and its impact on Australia, as well as its current journey. Our host, Steve Plummer, is a former player of club, state, and national levels in handball with a passion to spread the word about this great sport.

In this episode, Steve talks about his inspiration to talk about handball, his experience with the sport, the history of his involvement, and the current state of the sport in Australia. Steve encourages others to get involved in the sport as a player, coach, or manager at any level. Handball is a great sport and a great community that is currently growing.

Steve is passionate about a sport called "seven aside," and it involves six players passing a ball and trying to score against a goalkeeper. The sport is fast-paced and fun, and playing this sport has allowed Steve to form many lifelong friendships.

Steve shares his journey of how he found the sport and a place to play, which led him to form a club and a team called the UNSW spider monkeys. Steve and his friends formed a club with the help of a coach from the University and went on to win silver in the University games. Over the years, Steve played for club, state, and national teams and made many friends through the sport.

We will provide updates on the draw and how the National Championships will run, as well as feature some of the teams and players in their preparation for the championships. The podcast will also cover the basics of the sport, including how to play, the tactics, the skills, how to find a club, and how to be your best.

In the episode, Steve notes that handball is a popular sport in central and eastern Europe, the Balkans, Scandinavia, South America, Asia, and the Middle East. Handball is described as a physical ball sport that is incredibly fast and a mixture of rugby and basketball. Australia will host the Olympics in 2032 in the city of Brisbane, and it will provide an opportunity for our growing handball community to shine and participate.

We hope you enjoy this episode and join us in our mission to bring handball back as a mainstream sport in Australia. Stay tuned for more updates, scores, happenings, and interviews with players and coaches.
